At its center “Cubis Largo” contains a perfect cube of negative space. Like much of our physical world, the internal shape is discernible only because of what surrounds it. Without contrast to the larger, stainless steel border, the central square of space does not exist.
In this work Ron Gard has achieved the ultimate alchemy, creating something out of nothing. Gard has done this once before with a sphere but “Cubis Largo” is his first attempt with a cube. Beautiful in its balance and symmetry, “Cubis Largo” demonstrates both Gard’s technical ability as well as his mastery of geometry. He has created a sculpture that is as much a triumph of art as it is a feat of mathematics.
