Appreciation of sculpture is often reduced to discussions of form, shape and size and considerations of color are avoided. Compared to painting, color is underutilized in sculpture.

Frederick Napoli’s works can be cited as vivid exceptions. Napoli’s sculpture “Onward and Upward” certainly demands consideration of its sleek and shapely form, but it is impossible to ignore the sunset pink and orange which streaks across the top of the ocean-blue sculpture.

Napoli, an art teacher for adults with disabilities, is talented and practiced in the application of color. “Onward and Upward” will, through the course of the day, change as sunlight strikes if from different angles. The dramatic colors will create a visual oasis in the challenging landscape of daily life.
