Shencheng Xu combines organic forms with human forms to explore the relationship between nature and man. He has developed a language of forms that present a visual story. The family of faces revealed in the pod-like boat remind the viewer of Noah’s Ark. Here, a single family is sailing off together, safe in their own world. Traditional training plays an important role in Xu’s work but creating specific forms is no longer his main focus.
Xu explores the differences between the East and West and between traditional and contemporary art. More than a dozen of his monumental pieces are on display in China. Xu teaches at Northeastern Illinois University.
