Perched is part of a series of sculptures created by Mike Helbing characterized by engaging arrangements of forms that signify balance. The bronze and stainless steel sculpture displays two lines of force with a sphere set precariously atop the scale-like structure. The sculpture is 11 feet tall, 9 feet wide and 8 feet deep.

Helbing received a MFA from Northern Illinois University. He assists Richard Huntin manufacturing large scale commissioned sculptures. His work has been locally featured at Pier Walk, Kay Garvey Gallery, and Chicago Cultural Center. Helbing describes his work as being a celestial party or mind toys, inviting viewers to "roam the playground of their mind." He keeps his work light-hearted with designs reminiscent of the night’s sky, allowing his audience an escape as they dream of other places.
