Gray, a PhD recipient from the University of Texas at Houston’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, often blends the organic nature of plants and animals with abstract or non-objective shapes. “In Deep Rough” merges these forms in playful steel and fiberglass creation.

“In Deep Rough,” like all of Gray’s works, was constructed with a combination of found, recycled, and new components. The piece has two personalities. The first being a comic piece of exaggerated public art depicting the sporting challenges of the game of golf. The second personality, uncovered when the work is viewed more broadly, reveals the anxiety beneath the amiability; that feeling of dread that comes from being in well over your head.
