Helbing grew up in the Midwest. Before he earned his MFA from Northern Illinois University, he had worked as a potter, painter, sculptor, factory man, surveyor, float builder and government artist. He had also served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. His own large scale sculptures are on display throughout the country and in Canada.

Mike has taken a salvaged batch tank from the food manufacturing industry. After the surface was ground to accentuate the history of the item (by highlighting the work cuts) the sparkle was reminiscent of ice. He has created a form that is columnar that reminds him of very cold and brittle ice.
